The Widows Sons have a clear vision for the 2024-2025 riding season. All planned rides will follow the shape of the Masonic Square and Compass logo throughout Victoria.
The first leg of the journey commenced on Saturday, November 16th. The starting point was Flinders Pier, where the air was filled with the salty scent of the bay and the lively sounds of seagulls overhead. Our starting group was only two however, we knew our numbers would grow across the journey. After taking an abundance of ridiculous photographs and the rise of the morning sun, we headed west towards Sorrento, where not only did the ferry await us, but so did Widows Sons Vice President Nicholas 'Bones" Sell. The vessel set its course across the shimmering waters, making its way to the historic town of Queenscliff. As the ferry glided smoothly over the waves, passengers eagerly anticipated the sights and experiences that awaited them on the other side.
In the quaint coastal town of Queenscliff, we had the pleasure of meeting Craig Farrington, whose extensive local knowledge guided us through a breathtaking scenic journey. As we drove through the stunning landscapes of the Brisbane Ranges National Park, we were mesmerised by the lush greenery and rolling hills that surrounded us. We paused our travels to stretch our legs, taking in the fresh air and the serene beauty of our surroundings. During this delightful break, we indulged in some truly delectable local cuisine that warmed both our stomachs and our spirits. Refreshed and invigorated, we continued our adventure toward Ballarat, a destination steeped in rich gold mining history. Nestled in the heart of Ballarat, the magnificent Ballarat Masonic Centre stands as a stunning testament to contemporary architecture. Its facade, elegantly clad in striking sandstone, provides a warm and inviting appearance, while the iconic Masonic Square and Compass logo elegantly crowns the building, symbolising its rich heritage and purpose. As we approached the entrance, we were warmly welcomed by President Peter Weeks, whose friendly demeanour instantly made us feel at home. Surrounding him were fellow members of the Widow Sons and their families, each having embarked on their own unique journeys to arrive at this gathering. The atmosphere buzzed with camaraderie and excitement as we prepared to celebrate our shared connections and experiences.
Inside the Masonic Center, we were immersed in a captivating display of historical artifacts that showcased the rich heritage of early Freemasons in the goldfields. Each piece told a story, reflecting the traditions and values upheld by these pioneers. Alongside these fascinating exhibits, we attended an engaging talk that delved into the formation of the early Masonic lodges in the region. The speaker, Brendan Kyne, shared insightful details about how these lodges were established, the challenges they faced, and their significant role in the community during that formative period. The exploration of both the artifacts and the history provided a deeper appreciation for the enduring legacy of Freemasonry in the area.
After our activities, we gathered at the charming Craig Hotel, a beautifully maintained gem that feels as though it has been untouched by time. The ambience was inviting, with its elegant decor and warm, welcoming atmosphere setting the perfect backdrop for our lunch. As we settled in, the aroma of freshly prepared dishes wafted through the air, adding to our excitement. It was a delightful opportunity to relax and unwind, savouring delicious food while celebrating the bonds of friendship that brought us all together. Laughter and conversation flowed freely, filling the room with a sense of joy and camaraderie.
As we reached the conclusion of our event, a bittersweet feeling settled over us, signaling it was time to leave the enchanting town of Ballarat. The mid-afternoon sun bathed us in its warm embrace, casting a golden hue on the tree-lined streets and reminding us of the joy we had just experienced. After making a final pit stop to refuel, we said our goodbyes, each of us heading back towards Melbourne, our hearts a little heavier yet filled with cherished memories.
The return trip became a canvas for contemplation. As the steady thrum of my motorcycle reverberated through my body and the wind whipped around me, my mind started to wander back to the vivid memories of the day’s adventures. Each rush of air seemed to carry fragments of moments, sparking vivid recollections of laughter, challenges, and the beauty of the open road. It struck me how long it had been since I felt such a profound sense of liberation from my daily obligations, a feeling that was almost foreign yet incredibly refreshing. The laughter and camaraderie shared among friends felt like a much-needed reprieve, and I relished in the sense of connection we had cultivated throughout the day. Each moment we spent together resonated within me, reminding me of the importance of companionship and the beauty of simply being present.
Days like these make me excited for our next adventure with my brothers.
