It’s truly humbling to realise just how many selfless and incredible individuals are by our side, ready to lend their support to those in need. December 15th beautifully illustrated this, as hundreds of compassionate people from our wonderful state came together to bring a little joy to the children facing Christmas in Monash Hospital this year. Their kindness is a heartwarming reminder of how we can all make a difference in the lives of others during difficult times.
This is how it happened:
Just a little over a month ago, a call was made, and the Widows Sons answered.
The Shriners Club, alongside the Order of the Eastern Star and Cranbourne Lodge #290, were gearing up for an exciting initiative with the help of Widows Sons Victoria — a toy run that promises to bring the community together. I could only imagine the enthusiasm bubbling among the Widows Sons as we prepared for this event. After a brief but inspiring conversation with President Peter ‘Daze’ Weeks, my mind began to race with possibilities. I envisioned a toy run that not only provides joy but also highlights the unique Masonic Districts of Victoria.
To give our efforts a tangible focus, we introduced the Blazing Star as our symbol. This iconic five-pointed shape, when mapped across Victoria, takes on the form of a star — a powerful emblem of Christmas cheer and a significant symbol within Freemasonry. As we moved forward, I eagerly anticipated how this event would unfold and the sense of community it would foster. Exciting times were ahead. A logo was then developed by the incredibly talented Jemma Weeks.

Planning was set in motion, and discussions began with venues eager to participate in hosting each of the five points of the Blazing Star. We greatly appreciate Peter ‘Daze’ Weeks for his dedicated efforts in securing our locations at Geelong, Ballarat, Macedon Ranges, Waverley, and South Eastern Masonic Centres. These Centres not only serve as our destinations but also play a crucial role in facilitating the collection of toy donations. Each Centre strongly relies on the commitment of countless volunteers from various Lodges, and we are grateful for their support in making this initiative a success.
I kicked off my day bright and early at 5:30 am, hopping on my motorcycle in Cranbourne and heading north to Hallam. There, I met up with VWBro Ian ‘Crossy’ Wingfield from the Widows Sons, who was ready to lead our group for the day. The ride to the Todd Rd service station was fantastic, and it was great to catch up with Wayne ‘Barko’ Evans-Barker and Jason ‘JGD’ Dawson when we got there. We were also joined by some awesome folks: ‘Forest,’ ‘Bones,’ and ‘Shaddaz.’ After that, we had an amazing ride to the Geelong Masonic Centre, and it just kept getting better.
The Geelong Masonic Centre created an inviting atmosphere with delightful egg and bacon rolls alongside a coffee van featuring an exceptional selection of teas, coffees, and hot chocolates. I chose a sea salt caramel hot chocolate that was so exquisite it made me want to linger there all day. As the day unfolded, more people arrived, bringing a vibrant energy. Among them were the Widows Sons, Freemasons on motorcycles and in cars, Harley Owners Group (HOG) riders, supporters, and charity partners, all gathered to kick off the inaugural Blazing Star Toy Run. The moment was marked by Widows Sons President Peter Weeks and Freemasons Victoria’s own MWGM Anthony 'Ayjay' Bucca cutting the ribbon, and with that, we were off to make a difference together.
For most of us, this was the first time riding together, and to do it as such a large group, some teething issues were bound to follow. However, we knew this would most likely be the case, so we had contingencies in place to see each rider arrive at our next destination safely and without major incidents. To think on the fly and adjust to circumstances is a true testament to the abilities and experiences shown on the road by the Widows Sons.
At the Ballarat Masonic Centre, our amazing volunteers were busy loading up Santa’s sleigh (aka truck), while the riders enjoyed a lovely morning tea with tasty Boston buns, biscuits, and refreshing drinks. We even had a fun raffle for a bottle of whisky, and we took a moment to give a shout-out to MWGM Anthony Bucca. Calling the day brief would be an understatement—our schedule was packed at each stop, leaving us little time to catch our breath! But whenever we did get a moment to relax, we happily jumped into group photos and presentations, making some great memories along the way.
Once we were back on our bikes, we zoomed off towards the North, excited for a quick fuel stop before heading to Romsey. We couldn’t wait to reach Sunshine Macedon Ranges, where there would be an amazing sausage sizzle and refreshing drinks just waiting for us! We made it just in time too—noon had rolled around, and “Blazing Star” felt like the perfect name for our day as the temperature began to climb. The coolest treats at our stop turned out to be those ice-cold drinks, and we were so grateful to find plenty of them and some shady spots to relax!
Our journey down south toward the city brought us a wonderful mix of fellow road users, and somehow we made it to the Waverley Masonic Centre mostly in one piece, with just a few stragglers. By this time, everyone was eager for some shade and a cool drink. Along the way, we welcomed even more familiar faces joining us for our final stretch, which was fantastic!
A huge shoutout to the amazing volunteers who fired up the BBQs at each stop—your effort makes all the difference. It’s not just about being freemasons; it’s our wives, partners, friends, and family all pitching in to help out. Your contributions are truly valued and don't go unnoticed. There are so many behind-the-scenes heroes who may not always get the credit they deserve. We see you—those who help set everything up, plan, and handle the logistics. Whether you're directing traffic or handing out water, your support is what makes this all possible. You are all truly appreciated!
The sleigh was all loaded up again, and our cheerful group hit the road! We were on the home stretch, buzzing with excitement at the thought of being greeted by our loved ones. I zipped down the freeway, but then – oh no! – I realized I had left my bag in Mount Waverley. I quickly took an exit and hurried back to grab it before continuing on to the South Eastern Masonic Centre.
A final ceremony was held to express gratitude to those who made the day truly unforgettable. Widows Sons President Bro Peter ‘Daze’ Weeks opened the event by thanking all of the Blazing Star partners. Following this, MWGM Anthony Bucca acknowledged the individuals who played a key role in making the day possible. The beautifully crafted sleigh was officially presented to representatives from Monash Hospital, marking a significant and emotional moment for all involved. As the hospital representatives received the sleigh, they shared heartfelt reflections on the profound impact that the day’s events would have on the young patients who would spend Christmas in their care.
They emphasised that the collective efforts and contributions of everyone who participated would go a long way in ensuring that these children felt a genuine spark of love and support during a challenging time. The atmosphere was filled with warmth and gratitude, making it a truly heartfelt occasion, a crowning achievement for all who had taken part in this noble endeavour. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed to this incredible effort. From the generous individuals who donated toys and funds to the dedicated volunteers who managed the refreshment stands, packed countless boxes, and participated in the journey, every contribution mattered. A heartfelt thank you to Philip Bateman and Nicole Stewart for ensuring our valuable cargo was packed securely into the truck despite the extreme heat. To the photographers and videographers who captured the magic of the day, as well as those who provided merchandise and refreshments. The creativity and enthusiasm of those who set up entertainment and organized stands truly brought the event to life.
Each person played a significant role in making this a memorable experience. Together, we accomplished something wonderful, all for the joy of the kids!
